How scrap value is worked out

Scrap is worth its pure metal. A gram of 14K gold holds 0.583 g of fine gold, so it is worth 58.3 % of the pure gold price per gram. Sterling .925 silver is 92.5 % silver.

Nobody pays 100 % of that value: the buyer has to melt, assay and refine the metal, and carries the risk that it is not the fineness it claims. So buyers pay a percentage, usually between 70 and 90 % depending on volume and karat.

Before weighing, remove stones, pearls and anything that is not precious metal, like steel clasp springs. If in doubt about the fineness, test it with a touchstone and acids; a stamp is not always honest.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gram of 14K scrap gold worth?

58.3 % of the pure gold price per gram, less whatever percentage the buyer keeps. The calculator gives you both figures at today's price.

What percentage do buyers pay for scrap gold?

Typically between 70 and 90 % of the metal value. Pawn shops and counter buyers sit lower; refiners buying volume sit higher.

How do I know what karat my gold is?

Look for the stamp: 10K, 14K, 18K or the fineness in thousandths (417, 585, 750). With no stamp or any doubt, a jeweler can test it with a touchstone and acids in minutes.

Is .720 coin silver valued the same way?

Yes, by its pure silver content: 72 % of its weight. Coins with numismatic value can be worth more than their metal.

Why am I not paid the price I see in the news?

The news quotes a troy ounce of pure gold. Your piece contains alloy, has to be melted and refined, and the buyer needs a margin. That gap is the percentage.
