How to calculate your platinum's value
The market quotes platinum per troy ounce. Prices here are in US dollars (USD), the currency the spot is quoted in; we convert them from troy ounces into grams and kilos. Estimated melt value is pure metal content: weight × (fineness ÷ 1000) × price per gram of fine platinum.
- 1.Enter the piece weight in grams, troy ounces, or kilos.
- 2.Pick the fineness stamped on it (for example Pt950 or Pt900).
- 3.We multiply weight by the purity factor and the live per-gram spot.
About the live platinum price
Today's platinum price reflects the international XPT spot, quoted in US dollars (USD). It is a metal reference, not a jewelry retail price. Almost all jewelry platinum is Pt950: 95% platinum, the rest ruthenium, iridium, or cobalt.
Frequently asked questions
- What is today's platinum price per gram?
- The per-gram figure above is the fine (999) platinum spot in US dollars (USD). It updates live from the international market.
- What do Pt950 and Pt900 mean?
- They are the fineness in parts per thousand. Pt950 is 95% pure platinum and the standard for engagement rings and wedding bands; Pt900 is 90% and Pt850 is 85%. We multiply weight by that factor and by the fine-platinum per-gram price.
- Is platinum worth more than gold?
- It depends on the day. Platinum traded above gold for years, but today it is usually cheaper per gram. A platinum piece still weighs more than the same piece in gold, because platinum is denser (21.4 g/cm³ against 19.3 g/cm³ for pure gold).
- How do I know if my jewelry is platinum?
- Look for the stamp: Pt, Plat, or Platinum followed by 950, 900, or 850. Platinum does not tarnish or turn yellow and feels heavy in the hand. Without a stamp, a buyer can confirm it with an acid test or an XRF analyzer.
- Does this include labor or design?
- No. This is metal value only. Jewelry retail prices usually add labor, brand, and margin, and platinum costs more to work than gold.
