3D jewelry scale: your piece's weight in gold, silver or platinum from its file

Before you print the wax or send it to casting, upload your piece's 3D model and get its volume and what it would weigh in every metal: 10K to 24K gold, .925 and .950 silver, platinum and palladium. The file is read in your browser and never leaves your computer.

Free, no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser.

3D jewelry scale

Your file is read in your browser: it is not uploaded anywhere.

Upload a file to see its volume and what it would weigh in each metal.

How to use it

How to work out a piece's weight from its 3D file

  1. 1.Export your piece from Rhino, Matrix, MatrixGold, ZBrush, Blender or your design software as STL, OBJ, GLB, GLTF or FBX.
  2. 2.Drag the file onto the scale or click to choose it.
  3. 3.Check the units are right: we guess them from the size, but you can change them.
  4. 4.Read the volume and estimated weight in each metal, and what the gold or silver is worth at today's price.

How a 3D model becomes a weight

A piece's weight is its volume times the metal's density. The scale works out the mesh's exact volume by adding up the tetrahedra its triangles form, then multiplies it by each alloy's typical density: 19.32 g/cm³ for 24K gold, 15.6 for 18K yellow, 13.1 for 14K, 10.36 for .925 silver and 20.7 for platinum 950.

For the volume to be right the mesh has to be closed, with no holes. If the model has open edges we warn you: repair it in your software before trusting the weight.

Units matter. An STL does not say what units it was drawn in: an 18 mm ring exported in centimetres would weigh a thousand times less. So the scale suggests units from the size of the piece and lets you change them.

A real casting can weigh slightly more or less than the estimate, from porosity, finishing and the exact alloy. Use it to quote and to know how much metal to prepare, and add the tree and button on top.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what my ring will weigh in gold before casting?

Upload the ring's 3D file to the scale. It works out the model's volume and multiplies it by each karat's density, so you see the weight in 10K, 14K, 18K and 24K at once.

What formats does it take?

STL, OBJ, GLB, GLTF and FBX. A GLTF must have its data embedded; if it comes with a separate .bin file, export it as GLB or STL.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The model is read and measured in your browser; it never leaves your computer. You can use it with clients' designs without worry.

Why is the weight far too big or too small?

Almost always the units. If you exported in centimetres or inches and the scale read millimetres, the weight is off by a thousand or ten thousand times. Change the model units and check the dimensions match your piece.

How much metal should I prepare to cast the piece?

The piece's weight plus the tree and button, usually 30 to 50 % extra for a small piece. The excess is recovered and remelted.
