How to calculate a selling price
Add every piece cost and divide the total by one minus margin and commission written as decimals. Formula: price = total cost ÷ (1 - margin - commission).
- 1.Add materials, labor, packaging, and every other direct cost.
- 2.Set the profit percentage you want to keep from the sale.
- 3.Add marketplace, payment, or salesperson commission so the price covers it.
Margin and markup are not the same
- Profit margin
- Profit as a percentage of selling price. A 30% margin means 30% of revenue remains as profit after the included costs.
- Markup on cost
- Profit as a percentage of cost. The calculator shows it for reference but uses margin to set the suggested selling price.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate a jewelry piece's profit margin?
- Subtract total cost and commissions from the selling price. Divide that profit by the selling price and multiply the result by 100.
- Which costs should I include for a jewelry piece?
- Include metal, stones, findings, labor, packaging, and every expense directly related to making or acquiring the piece.
- Why does the calculator divide by one minus margin?
- Margin is measured against selling price, not cost. Adding 30% to cost creates a 30% markup but a lower profit margin.
- How do I include a marketplace or payment fee?
- Enter its percentage under sales commission. The calculator raises the price to cover it without reducing your target margin.
- Does the suggested price include tax?
- No. The result is shown before tax. Apply the tax required for your business and the transaction.
