How the price per karat is worked out

A gram of gold at a given karat costs the pure gold price per gram times its purity: the karat over 24. A gram of 14K is 14/24 = 58.3 % gold, so it is worth 58.3 % of a gram of pure gold.

For 24K we take 99.99 % purity, that of commercial fine gold, as our gold price quoter does. For silver, the fineness is the purity: .925 is 92.5 % silver.

The premium pays for turning metal into a ready-to-use product. Casting grain takes almost no work; wire and sheet go through the rolling mill and drawplate; chain takes far more. Every supplier sets its own percentages: the calculator's are a starting point.

The alloy metals (silver and copper) cost very little next to gold, which is why they are not added to the price per karat.
